White matter fibres and brain, artwork C015 / 1937
White matter fibres overlaid a 3d model of the human brain in top view. Coloured 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan of the bundles of white matter nerve fibres in the brain. The fibres transmit nerve signals between brain regions and between the brain and the spinal cord. Diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) is a variant of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in which a magnetic field maps the water contained in neuron fibers, thus mapping their criss-crossing patterns. A similar technique called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is also used to explore neural data of white matter fibres in the brain. Both methods allow mapping of their orientations and the connections between brain regions. Data/software: NIH Human Connectome Project /humanconnectomeproject.org)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "White matter fibres and brain, artwork C015 / 1937" showcases the intricate beauty of the human brain. In this top view image, white matter fibres are overlaid on a 3D model of the brain, creating a mesmerizing display of neural connections. Using coloured 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan, this artwork captures the bundles of white matter nerve fibres that transmit vital nerve signals between different regions of the brain and even to the spinal cord. The DSI technique utilizes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to map water molecules within neuron fibers, allowing for a detailed visualization of their criss-crossing patterns. Similar to diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), another method used in exploring white matter fibres in the brain, DSI enables researchers to map orientations and connections between various areas of the brain. These advanced techniques provide invaluable insights into how information is transmitted throughout our nervous system. The data and software utilized for this stunning artwork come from NIH Human Connectome Project. By combining scientific research with artistic representation, this print offers a unique perspective on our complex neural pathways. It serves as a reminder of both the intricacy and elegance found within our own minds while highlighting advancements in neuroimaging technology that continue to expand our understanding of human cognition.
