Abram Jaffe, Soviet physicist
Abram Fedorovich Jaffe (1880-1960), Soviet physicist. Jaffe (sometimes spelt Ioffe) studied electromagnetism, radiology, and semiconductor physics. He also oversaw the expansion of work in radioactivity, superconductivity and nuclear physics. In 1918, he became the head of what would later (after St Petersburg was renamed Leningrad) be called the Leningrad Physico-Technical Institute. The institute is now called the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in his honour. Photographed in Russia in 1947

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Abram Jaffe, a prominent Soviet physicist who made significant contributions to the fields of electromagnetism, radiology, and semiconductor physics. Born in 1880 and passing away in 1960, Jaffe's remarkable career spanned several decades of scientific exploration. In addition to his groundbreaking research, Jaffe played a pivotal role in expanding work on radioactivity, superconductivity, and nuclear physics. In 1918, he assumed leadership of what would later be known as the Leningrad Physico-Technical Institute (now named the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute) after St Petersburg underwent a name change. The monochrome image captures Jaffe's intellectual prowess and determination as he gazes into the lens with an air of confidence. With his signature white hair and distinguished features, this portrait immortalizes him as one of Russia's most influential scientists. Taken in 1947 against the backdrop of post-war Russia, this photograph serves as a testament to Jaffe's enduring legacy within the scientific community. His expertise not only shaped our understanding of physical phenomena but also paved the way for future advancements in nuclear chemistry and other related fields. As we reflect upon this historical moment frozen in time by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of Abram Jaffe's invaluable contributions to science and his lasting impact on generations to come.
