1823 William Buckland cave hyena fossil
1823 Copper engraving of a modern hyena (top) and British hyena jawbones (below) from Kirkdale cave (below) with an actual cave hyena (Crocuta crocuta spelaea) fossil jawbone resting on the page. Drawn by Webster, Clift and Morland, printed by Basire. In William Bucklands " Reliquiae Diluvianae or Observations on the Organic Remains contained in Caves, Fissures, and Diluvial Gravel, and on the Geological Phenomena Attesting the Action of an Universal Deluge". John Murray, 1823. Buckland discovered many extinct British species of mammal during his pioneering work on cave deposits but was most associated with cave hyenas. His work was cutting-edge, but still lay in the framework of a Biblical flood. He believed many of the fossils he was collecting had been saved from the flood by the dens of prehistoric hyenas. The eccentric Buckland even owned a tame hyena to test their effect on bones

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the 1823 William Buckland cave hyena fossil. The image, an exquisite copper engraving, features a modern hyena depicted at the top, while below it lies British hyena jawbones from Kirkdale cave. Resting on the page is an actual fossil jawbone of a cave hyena (Crocuta crocuta spelaea), adding an authentic touch to this scientific masterpiece. The artwork was drawn by Webster, Clift, and Morland and expertly printed by Basire for William Buckland's groundbreaking publication titled "Reliquiae Diluvianae or Observations on the Organic Remains contained in Caves, Fissures, and Diluvial Gravel". In his work, Buckland made numerous discoveries of extinct British mammal species within cave deposits but became particularly renowned for his association with cave hyenas. Buckland's research was revolutionary for its time as he explored geological phenomena that supported the concept of an all-encompassing Biblical flood. He believed that prehistoric hyenas had saved many fossils from this deluge through their dens. Such eccentricity even led him to own a tame hyena to test its effect on bones. This print not only captures Buckland's pioneering spirit but also serves as a testament to the intersection between religion and science during that era. It symbolizes both discovery and faith as it unveils ancient mysteries hidden deep within caves - remnants of long-extinct creatures like mammoths and subfossilized remains. Displayed proudly in museums worldwide today, this relic stands as a testament to William Buckland's profound contributions to paleontology and our understanding of Earth's past.
