EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the transformation of Lebanon's historic Opera Building into the first-ever Virgin Megastore in the Middle East. Taken on 12 June 2001, it showcases the art-deco beauty of the building, which had suffered severe damage during Lebanon's civil war from 1975 to 1990. The image depicts renovation work underway in Beirut's heart as this iconic structure prepares to welcome music enthusiasts and bookworms alike. Scheduled for its official inauguration on 03 July, this British multimedia firm's store will be graced by none other than Richard Branson himself, the billionaire owner of Virgin. Built in the 1930s under French mandate, this former music hall is set to house a sprawling retail space spanning over an impressive area of 2,800 square meters – similar in size to its counterpart on Paris' renowned Champs-Elysees. The store promises an extensive collection of CDs, DVDs, CD-ROMs, and books that will cater to diverse tastes and preferences. Furthermore, two restaurants within its premises will provide visitors with delightful culinary experiences while a dedicated stage awaits theatrical performances and concerts. As captured by AFP photographer Joseph Barrak with his keen eye for detail and composition skills evident in this vertical exterior view shot; he skillfully portrays not just a mere renovation project but also symbolizes hope and revival for both cultural heritage preservation and modern entertainment consumption.
