EDITORS COMMENTS
Okehampton Castle, nestled in the heart of Devon, England, stands as a testament to the rich history and defensive prowess of medieval England. Captured in this stunning photograph by Peter Anderson of Historic England, K981215 presents a breathtaking view of the castle's ruins, including the imposing motte and the remnants of the keep and bailey buildings. The castle, established in the late 11th or early 12th century, was a significant Norman fortification designed to protect the borderlands between England and Wales. Its strategic location atop a hill overlooking the River Okement made it an ideal stronghold. The motte, a large man-made mound, served as the foundation for the castle's keep, a tall, rectangular tower that once housed the lord and his family. The bailey, a lower enclosure, provided protection for the castle's inhabitants and accommodated additional structures such as stables, workshops, and living quarters. Despite its impressive size and history, Okehampton Castle has seen its fair share of destruction. It was besieged several times during the English Civil War and was later neglected, allowing the elements to take their toll. Today, the castle stands in ruins, but its historical significance remains undiminished. The photograph captures the castle's haunting beauty, with the overgrown foliage and moss-covered stones adding to its mystique. The ruins of Okehampton Castle serve as a reminder of the past, inviting visitors to explore the stories and secrets that lie within its walls.
