1848 Abdicates Good Knowing Philippe Revolution Wanted
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic moment captured in February 1848, King Louis-Philippe of France, also known as "Le Roi Bourgeois" or "The Citizen King," makes the decision to abdicate the throne. The monarch, who had come to power through a revolution in 1830, was no longer wanted by the French people. The revolution of 1848, fueled by widespread social unrest and economic hardship, had reached a boiling point. Louis-Philippe, a shrewd and pragmatic ruler, knew when it was time to leave. He made his way to the Tuileries Palace in Paris to address the crowds that had gathered, demanding his departure. In a speech delivered on February 24, 1848, the king announced his abdication, stating, "I abdicate in favor of my grandson, the Count of Paris." With his reign at an end, Louis-Philippe went into exile, choosing to make his home in England. The decision to leave France was a difficult one, as he was leaving behind his native land and the comforts of the royal court. However, he was assured of a warm welcome in England, where he would be treated as a respected former monarch. Despite the comforts of his new home, Louis-Philippe was said to have missed the food of France. The English cuisine of the time was not to his liking, but he found solace in the friendliness and hospitality of the English people. The image of Louis-Philippe in exile serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of history and the transient nature of power. The events of 1848 marked the end of the Bourbon monarchy in France and ushered in a new era of political upheaval and change.
