EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to September 1934 with this print from the STEAM Museum of the GWR. The image showcases holidaymakers basking in the late summer sun outside the iconic Victoria Pavilion at Capstone Parade in Ilfracombe, Devon. Originally opened in 1888, this magnificent structure was rebuilt during the roaring twenties as a grand concert hall. Its elegant architecture and prime location on the Promenade made it a beloved landmark for locals and visitors alike. Sadly, Mother Nature had other plans for this historic gem. In the 1990s, a devastating storm wreaked havoc on the building, leaving it irreparably damaged. However, out of its ashes rose another architectural marvel - The Landmark Theatre now proudly stands where once stood The Pavilion. This print captures not only a moment frozen in time but also serves as a poignant reminder of how structures can come and go throughout history. It evokes nostalgia for an era when seaside holidays were filled with joyous laughter and carefree moments spent under clear blue skies. As you gaze upon this image, let your imagination transport you to that bygone era - imagine strolling along Capstone Parade amidst bustling crowds of holidaymakers or perhaps even attending one of those unforgettable concerts within those hallowed walls.
