Flask-shaped pitcher plant

Flask-shaped pitcher plant (Nepenthes ampullaria). This is a carnivorous plant, using scent, nectar and colour to attract insects (seen inside the pitchers). When insects fall into the liquid at the bottom of the trap (pitcher) they are digested by enzymes. This provides the plant with nutrients, such as phosphorous and nitrogen. Pitcher plants are typically found in nutrient-poor habitats, such as swamps. Photographed in Gunung Mulu National Park, in Sarawak, the Malaysian part of Borneo

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the unique beauty of a Flask-shaped pitcher plant, scientifically known as Nepenthes ampullaria. With its elegant shape and vibrant colors, this carnivorous plant lures insects using a combination of enticing scents, nectar, and alluring hues. As depicted in the image, small insects can be seen trapped inside the pitchers. The ingenious mechanism behind this botanical marvel becomes apparent when these unsuspecting insects fall into the liquid at the base of each pitcher. Enzymes secreted by the plant then go to work, breaking down their prey and extracting vital nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen. This process allows the Flask-shaped pitcher plant to thrive even in nutrient-poor habitats like swamps. Photographed within Gunung Mulu National Park in Sarawak, Malaysia's part of Borneo Island, this snapshot captures nature's ingenuity at its finest. The lush Malaysian forest serves as an ideal backdrop for this biological wonder that thrives in Asian tropical climates. With its downward perspective offering a mesmerizing view from above, Robbie Shone skillfully captures every intricate detail of this Bornean carnivorous plant species. From its delicate thorns to its impressive traps or pitchers brimming with captured prey – every element is showcased with precision. This remarkable photograph not only highlights the fascinating world of botany but also reminds us of nature's incredible diversity found within rainforests around Asia.
