Beetle larva head, SEM

Beetle larva head, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Beetles (order Coleoptera) are insects that have biting mouthparts and two pairs of wings, with one pair modified into a protective covering structure. Most beetle larvae also have a set of biting mouthparts, such as the crossed pair seen at lower centre. The beetle larvas antennae (sensory organs) are at centre left and at centre right, attached to the head just above the biting mouthparts. The eyes (red) are just above each of the antennae. Two palps (sensory mouthparts) are seen behind the biting mouthparts. Four of its six legs are seen in the background. This larva is not grub-like, but looks like an adult

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a Beetle larva head, captured using a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Beetles, belonging to the order Coleoptera, are fascinating insects known for their biting mouthparts and unique wing structure. In this image, we can observe the larva's crossed pair of biting mouthparts at the lower center, highlighting its predatory nature. The sensory organs of this beetle larva are prominently displayed in this image. The antennae, located at both center left and center right of the head just above the biting mouthparts, serve as crucial sensory tools for navigation and communication. The eyes, depicted in striking red hues, sit just above each antenna. Behind its formidable mouthparts lie two palps - specialized sensory mouthparts that aid in feeding and detecting prey or potential threats. Additionally, four out of six legs can be seen subtly emerging from the background. What sets this particular larva apart is its resemblance to an adult beetle rather than a typical grub-like appearance. This remarkable adaptation allows it to blend seamlessly into its surroundings while retaining essential features necessary for survival. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this mesmerizing snapshot of nature's wonders – an exploration into insect anatomy that unveils not only beauty but also serves as a testament to evolution's ingenuity within our wild world.
