Gigantic Tabular Iceberg, Deception Bay, Antarctica

An iceberg or ice mountain is a large piece of freshwater ice that has broken off a glacier or an ice shelf and is floating freely in open water. It may subsequently become frozen into pack ice (one form of sea ice). As it drifts into shallower waters, it may come into contact with the seabed, a process referred to as seabed gouging by ice. When a piece of iceberg ice melts, it makes a fizzing sound called Bergie Seltzer. This sound is made when the water-ice interface reaches compressed air bubbles trapped in the ice. As this happens, each bubble bursts, making a popping sound. The bubbles contain air trapped in snow layers very early in the history of the ice, that eventually got buried to a given depth (up to several kilometers) and pressurized as it transformed into firn then to glacial ice. icebergs can be classified on the basis of their shape. The two basic types of iceberg forms are tabular and non-tabular. Tabular icebergs have steep sides and a flat top, much like a plateau, with a length-to-height ratio of more than 5:1. This type of iceberg, also known as an ice island, can be quite large, Ice Island. Antarctic icebergs formed by breaking off from an ice shelf, such as the Ross Ice Shelf or Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, are typically tabular

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring beauty of a Gigantic Tabular Iceberg in Deception Bay, Antarctica. The sheer magnitude of this ice mountain is truly breathtaking, as it stands tall and proud against the backdrop of open water. As we delve into the fascinating world of icebergs, we learn that they are massive pieces of freshwater ice that have broken off from glaciers or ice shelves. Floating freely in the open water, these majestic structures may eventually become frozen into pack ice or drift towards shallower waters where they can come into contact with the seabed. One intriguing fact about iceberg melting is the unique sound it produces - Bergie Seltzer. As each bubble containing compressed air bursts at the water-ice interface, a distinctive fizzing and popping sound resonates through the icy surroundings. In terms of classification, tabular icebergs like this one feature steep sides and a flat top resembling a plateau. With their length-to-height ratio exceeding 5:1, these colossal formations are often referred to as "ice islands". Originating from breaking off an ice shelf such as Ross Ice Shelf or Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in Antarctica, tabular icebergs can reach extraordinary sizes. Artie Photography has masterfully captured this natural wonder with his lens, allowing us to appreciate its grandeur and marvel at nature's artistic prowess. This print serves as a reminder of Earth's incredible landscapes found in remote corners like Deception Bay in Antarctica.
