EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1922 showcases the iconic Weights Cigarettes advertisement by Players. The image features a man dressed in a whimsical pierrot costume, complete with a monocle and cigarette in hand. Standing tall, he holds a metal stick adorned with an enchanting orange Chinese lantern that illuminates the scene. The lantern proudly displays the brand name "PLAYERs // WEIGHTS // CIGARETTES" while the base of the display bears the inscription "PLAYERs // WEIGHTS // CIGARETTES // JOHN PLAYER & SONS, NOTTINGHAM". The reverse side of this unique card reveals its versatility as it includes both a support to stand upright and a label indicating its purpose as one of Mardons' Window Novelties. This embossed showcard was crafted by skilled varnishers, gelatiners, and frame makers based in Bristol and London.
