Born in the Dutch Republic, William rose to prominence as a military leader and became Prince of Orange in 1672. In 1688, he invaded England with the support of the English Parliament, leading to the Glorious Revolution and the deposition of his Catholic cousin, King James II. William's accession marked the end of the Stuart monarchy and the beginning of a new era in British history. William's reign was marked by religious tolerance, constitutional reform, and the establishment of a strong military. He and his wife, Mary II, ruled jointly until her death in 1694, after which William ruled alone until his own death in 1702. This period, known as the Williamite-Maryite period, saw the signing of the Act of Settlement, which ensured the succession of the Protestant elector of Hanover, George I, upon William's death.
