Annesley Buchel Horace Promotional Sketches Sketching Tens

Who Is He?

EDITORS COMMENTS
, a captivating sketch by the renowned artist Charles Buchel, is a promotional postcard for Horace Annesley Vachell's play of the same name. Based on Mrs. Belloc Lowndes' novel "The Lodger" (1913), this theatrical masterpiece was first produced at the prestigious Haymarket Theatre on the 9th of December 1915. The image portrays a man intently sketching the enigmatic figure of a lodger, his brow furrowed in deep concentration. The sketchpad in his hand is filled with other portraits, each one as intriguing as the next. The question "Who Is He?" written in bold letters above the image adds to the intrigue, inviting the viewer to ponder the identity of the mysterious lodger. The 1910s, also known as the 10s or the Tens, was an era of great social and political change, and the First World War loomed large over the collective consciousness of the time. "Who Is He?" reflects the popular fascination with the unknown and the fear of the unknown other, a theme that resonated deeply with audiences during this period. Charles Buchel's evocative sketch perfectly captures the mood and intrigue of Vachell's play, making it a must-have for any theatre or history enthusiast. This postcard is not only a beautiful work of art but also a window into the past, offering a glimpse into the cultural and historical context of the early 20th century.
