EDITORS COMMENTS
Mrs. Teresa Billington-Greig (1877-1964), a prominent figure in the British suffragette movement, is depicted in this evocative portrait taken around 1908. At the time, Billington-Greig was serving as the Hon. Organising Secretary for the Women's Freedom League (WFL), having left the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the autumn of 1907. Billington-Greig's decision to leave the WSPU was a significant moment in the suffragette movement's history. She was a dedicated member of the WSPU, having joined in 1905 and playing an active role in various campaigns, including the militant tactics of window-breaking and arson. However, she grew increasingly disillusioned with the WSPU's focus on individual acts of violence and its hierarchical structure. In contrast, the WFL advocated for a more collective and democratic approach to achieving women's suffrage. Billington-Greig's departure marked the beginning of a split within the suffragette movement, with some following her lead and others remaining loyal to the WSPU and its militant tactics. Despite the challenges and controversies, Billington-Greig remained committed to the cause of women's rights and suffrage. Her leadership in the WFL helped to broaden the suffragette movement's base and bring new perspectives to the fight for the vote. This portrait captures a pivotal moment in Billington-Greig's life and in the history of the suffragette movement.
