EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Sir Edwin Lutyens, the esteemed British architect, is seen in his Mansfield Street offices during the tumultuous period of the Second World War. With a focused expression, Lutyens stands beside a model segment of his design for the Metropolitan Cathedral of Liverpool, a Romanesque masterpiece that was intended to be a grand addition to the city's skyline. The year is 1942, and the architect, who was also responsible for designing the government buildings at Delhi and the Cenotaph, is deeply engrossed in bringing his vision for Liverpool's cathedral to life. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Liverpool was to be an ambitious and monumental structure, a testament to the city's religious and architectural heritage. However, the economic realities of post-war Britain made the completion of the cathedral an unrealistic prospect. The Romanesque design, which featured intricate stonework and soaring arches, was deemed too expensive to construct in its entirety. Despite the challenges, Lutyens' design for the cathedral's crypt was eventually completed, forming part of the overall modern structure designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd and finished in 1967. The crypt, with its striking arches and intricate stonework, stands as a testament to Lutyens' vision and the enduring legacy of his architectural genius. The photograph captures a moment in history, a glimpse into the creative process of a man who left an indelible mark on the architectural landscape of Britain and beyond.
