EDITORS COMMENTS
Saint Clotilde (475-545): Queen of All the Franks and Second Wife of King Clovis I This beautifully colored engraving depicts Saint Clotilde, the revered queen of the Franks, who played a significant role in the spread of Christianity in the 5th and 6th centuries. Born in Burgundy around 475 AD, Clotilde was the second wife of King Clovis I, the first king to unite the Frankish tribes under a single ruler. Clotilde was a devout Catholic, and her deep faith influenced her husband, who converted to Catholicism in 496 AD, just before his victory in the Battle of Tolbiac against the Alamanni. Clotilde's influence extended beyond her husband, as she is said to have converted many of the Frankish nobility and commoners to the Catholic faith. This engraving captures the regal elegance of Saint Clotilde, with her intricately braided hair, adorned with jewels, and a crown atop her head. The rich colors and detailed engraving techniques of the 19th century bring the image to life, transporting us back to the time of the early Frankish kingdom. Clotilde's legacy as a queen and patron of the Catholic faith endures, and she is revered as a saint in the Catholic Church. Her story is a testament to the power of faith and the enduring influence of strong women in history.
