Australian Flown Designed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment when the first Australian-built aircraft took to the skies in October 1910. The aircraft, designed and flown by John R. Duigan, represents a significant milestone in the country's aviation history. Duigan, an ambitious and innovative engineer, spent countless hours designing and constructing the aircraft in his workshop in Sydney. With a passion for aviation and a determination to make his mark, he drew inspiration from the early pioneers of flight such as the Wright Brothers and Bleriot. The aircraft, a biplane with a wingspan of 12 meters and a length of 7.5 meters, was made primarily of wood and fabric. Powered by a 16 horsepower engine, it was capable of reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour. On the fateful day of October 1910, Duigan took the aircraft for its maiden flight at the Randwick Racecourse in Sydney. With a crowd of onlookers gathered to witness the event, Duigan taxied the aircraft down the runway and took off smoothly, circling the field several times before landing safely. The successful flight marked a turning point in Australian aviation, inspiring a new generation of engineers and aviators to pursue their dreams of flight. Duigan's achievement paved the way for the development of a thriving aviation industry in Australia, which would go on to produce some of the world's most iconic aircraft designs. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of John R. Duigan and the early pioneers of Australian aviation. It serves as a reminder of the incredible progress that has been made in the field of aviation over the past century and the limitless potential for innovation that lies ahead.
