EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Curtiss-Cox Model 22 Cactus Kitten is seen crated at the Morane-Saulnier factory in France, awaiting shipment back to the United States. The year is 1920, and Texas oil millionaire S.E.J. Cox had made a bold decision to commission two racers for the prestigious James Gordon Bennett race, which was scheduled to take place in France the following September. Named Texas Wildcat and Cactus Kitten, these aircraft were designed, built, and crated in a remarkable short timeframe, without the advantage of pre-flight testing. The Curtiss-Cox Model 22 was an innovative aeronautical creation, reflecting the spirit of adventure and competition that characterized the early days of aviation. The aircraft boasted advanced features for the time, such as a biplane configuration, a powerful engine, and streamlined design. However, due to the rush to complete the racers, they were shipped to Europe without undergoing any flight testing. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of aviation, as the Cactus Kitten sits in its crate, ready to embark on its journey across the Atlantic. The image evokes a sense of anticipation and excitement, as the race and the future of these pioneering aircraft hung in the balance. The Curtiss-Cox Model 22 Cactus Kitten would go on to make history, demonstrating the ingenuity and determination of its creators and the boundless potential of aviation technology.
