EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handfinished chromolithograph by Henry Noel Humphreys, based on an original illustration by Jane Loudon from her book "Mrs. Jane Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials," published in London in 1849, showcases a beautiful arrangement of Scabious and Valerian species. The illustration features seven different Scabious varieties: Caucasian Scabious (Scabiosa caucasia), Common Sweet Scabious (Scabiosa atropurpurea), Grass-leaved Scabious (Scabiosa graminifolia), and three unidentified Scabious species. Additionally, two Valerian species are depicted: Red Valerian (Valeriana rubra) and Siberian Valerian (Valeriana sibirica). The long-styled Crosswort (Crucianella stilosa) is also included in this vibrant composition. Scabious, a genus of the Daisy family, is known for its distinctive bell-shaped flowers with prominent, tubular calyces. These plants are native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and they are prized for their ornamental value and their ability to attract various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Valerian, on the other hand, is a genus of about 250 species of flowering plants, native to Europe, Asia, and North America. Valerian roots have been used for medicinal purposes for centuries due to their calming and sedative properties. This exquisite lithograph, with its intricate details and rich colors, offers a glimpse into the botanical world of the mid-19th century, showcasing the beauty and diversity of these fascinating plants. The artistry of Henry Noel Humphreys and Jane Loudon's keen observation skills come together to create a timeless work of botanical art.
