EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts a scene of Roman pompa sacra, or sacred procession, taken from a bas-relief in the Pio Clementino Museum. The image dates back to the reign of Hadrian or Nero, as indicated by the lack of beards on the noblemen. In the foreground, several Roman men, dressed in togas and adorned with laurel wreaths, gather around an altar. They appear to be engaged in a sacrificial rite, likely offering up a bull, a ram, and a pig in honor of the Roman god Mars. A woman, also wearing a toga and a laurel wreath, stands at the center of the scene, her hands raised in prayer. The men, with solemn expressions on their faces, prepare to make the offering. The intricate details of the bas-relief are beautifully captured in this engraving, from the folds of the togas to the textured laurel wreaths. The scene is reminiscent of the Suovetaurilia, an ancient Roman ritual involving the sacrifice of a pig, a bull, and a ram, which was believed to ensure the fertility of the herds and the prosperity of the harvest. The use of laurel wreaths suggests that this may be a triumphal procession, celebrating a military victory. This historical illustration, created by Corsi from Giulio Ferrario's Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World, published in Florence in 1843, offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and culture of ancient Rome.
