This 19th century engraving depicts members of the Order of Alcantara, also known as the Knights of St. Julian, an Iberian Military Order established in the 12th century during the Reconquista in the Kingdom of Castile and León, Spain. The Order, which took its name from the town of Alcantara, was founded to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela and to defend the western borders of the Christian kingdoms against Muslim invaders. The knights are shown here in their distinctive attire, wearing long green cloaks trimmed with ermine fur and bearing the emblem of St. Julian on their chests. St. Julian was a Roman soldier who, according to legend, was miraculously healed by a horse after being wounded in battle. The knights of the Order of Alcantara adopted this saint as their patron, and the horse became a prominent symbol in their heraldry. The knights are shown on horseback, dressed in armor and carrying shields adorned with the Order's cross, which consists of a white saltire on a red background. This cross, known as the Cross of Alcantara, is still used as the symbol of the modern-day Order of Alcantara, which was re-established in 1865. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Military Orders of the Middle Ages, a time when religion and chivalry intertwined to shape the course of European history. The Order of Alcantara played a significant role in the defense of the Iberian Peninsula during the Reconquista, and its legacy continues to be celebrated in Spain and beyond as a symbol of courage, faith, and devotion.
