1851 Control Coup Days Dictator Etat Napoleon Proclaims December

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the aftermath of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte's successful coup d'état on 5 December 1851, which marked the end of the Second Republic in France and the beginning of his reign as Napoleon III. The photograph, taken just three days after the event, shows the army in control of the streets of Paris. The soldiers, dressed in their uniforms and carrying their weapons, are seen marching through the city, maintaining order and securing key locations. Louis-Napoleon, a former president of the Second Republic, had staged the coup in response to growing political instability and economic hardship. He believed that only a strong hand could restore order and stability to the country. With the support of the army and a small group of loyalists, he proclaimed himself Emperor of the French on 2 December, and on 5 December, the National Assembly ratified his new constitution, making him a dictator. The coup was met with widespread resistance, both from the opposition and from within the military ranks. However, Louis-Napoleon's forces were able to quell the uprisings, and he went on to rule France for the next 16 years. This photograph offers a glimpse into the immediate aftermath of the coup, when the army was still in control of the streets and the future of the country was uncertain. It is a powerful reminder of the tumultuous political climate of 19th-century France and the dramatic events that shaped its history.
