EDITORS COMMENTS
King Charles VII of France, also known as Charles the Victorious (1422-1461), is depicted in this stunning chromolithograph from the diary of the Knights of Ehingen, housed in the Stuttgart Library. The image, drawn by Dr. Jakob Heinrich Hefner-Alteneck and lithographed by C. Regnier, published by Heinrich Keller in 1883, showcases the king in regal attire, surrounded by an ethereal angel holding his coat of arms. Charles VII, the last Capetian king of France, came to power during a tumultuous time in French history. Having spent much of his childhood in exile, he returned to France in 1429 to reclaim the throne from the English, who had occupied it since 1418. With the help of Joan of Arc, Charles was crowned King of France in Reims in 1429. The angel in this illustration symbolizes the divine intervention and support that Charles received during his reign. The king's coat of arms, displayed proudly by the angel, features three fleurs-de-lis, a symbol of the French monarchy. This image is a testament to the rich history and artistic talent of the Middle Ages. Dr. Hefner-Alteneck, a renowned German archeologist, art historian, and illustrator, meticulously captured the details of Charles VII's costume and the intricacies of the angel's wings, offering a glimpse into the fashion and artistry of the era. As the director of the Bavarian National Museum from 1868 until 1886, Hefner-Alteneck dedicated his life to the preservation and study of historical art and artifacts. This illustration, a beautiful fusion of history and art, is a testament to his commitment and passion.
