The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Date: 1917

This striking studio photograph captures Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964) in her uniform as Commandant of the Birchington Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) during World War I. The image, taken without her hat, showcases the intricate details of her jacket, which survives at Quex Park today (2015). The Birchington VAD Hospital, run by Kent/178, opened on 15 October 1914, and provided essential medical care to wounded soldiers until its closure on 31 January 1919. Hannah, the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, played a pivotal role in managing the hospital's operations.
