EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Edward VI (1537-1553), the young King of England and Ireland from 1547 until his death in 1553. Edward was the eldest son of Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn. At the time of this portrait, Edward was just 12 years old when he ascended to the throne following his father's death. During his brief reign, Edward became a prominent figure in the English Reformation, promoting Protestantism and reformist ideas. He was influenced by his advisors, including John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, who sought to establish a Protestant succession. Edward's reign was marked by significant political and religious changes. He abolished the Mass and other Catholic practices, and he established the First Book of Common Prayer, which became the foundation of the Anglican Church. Edward's reign also saw the consolidation of the Tudor dynasty and the House of Tudor's hold on the English throne. This vertical, upright, black and white portrait captures the young king's masculine and serious demeanor. Edward is depicted wearing the royal robes and the Imperial Crown, symbolizing his position as monarch. The portrait reflects the political and religious climate of the time, highlighting Edward's role as a Protestant reformer and the instigator of significant changes in English history. The engraving is an important historical document, providing a glimpse into the life and reign of a young king who left a lasting impact on the United Kingdom and Europe.
