EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures a pivotal moment in the Boxer Rebellion, a violent anti-foreigner uprising in China that lasted from 1898 to 1901. In the photograph, German troops of the multinational military force known as the Eight-Nation Alliance are seen taking up positions during the Battle of Tientsin on July 13th and 14th, 1900. The city of Tientsin, also known as Tianjin in modern Pinyin, was under siege by the Chinese Imperial army and the Boxers, who sought to expel all foreigners from China. The foreign population in the city was in grave danger, and the Eight-Nation Alliance, comprised of forces from Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, came to their rescue. In this photograph, German soldiers are seen preparing for battle in a trench, with their bedrolls and other equipment at the ready. The image underscores the intensity and urgency of the conflict, as well as the determination of the foreign powers to protect their interests and the lives of their citizens. The Battle of Tientsin was a turning point in the Boxer Rebellion, as it marked the beginning of the alliance's successful campaign to lift the siege and defeat the Chinese forces. The rebellion ultimately ended with the signing of the Boxer Protocol in September 1901, which imposed heavy reparations on China and strengthened the position of foreign powers in the country. This photograph is an important historical record of a significant moment in international relations and the modern history of China.
