This evocative portrait captures the stern yet thoughtful visage of Alexander Fletcher (1787-1860), a prominent Scottish Presbyterian churchman of the 19th century. Born in the Scottish Borders, Fletcher rose through the ranks of the Presbyterian Church to become a respected theologian, educator, and leader. He is best known for his role in the Disruption of 1843, a pivotal moment in Scottish church history. Fletcher was a staunch defender of Presbyterian principles and was deeply troubled by the encroachment of state interference in the church. When the Church of Scotland voted to allow the appointment of bishops, Fletcher and other like-minded ministers refused to accept this compromise and instead formed the Free Church of Scotland. The Disruption resulted in the largest mass resignation in Scottish history, with over 450 ministers and 200,000 parishioners leaving the established church. Despite the challenges and hardships that followed, Fletcher remained committed to his cause. He played a key role in establishing the Free Church and served as its Moderator in 1848. He also founded the New College in Edinburgh, which became a leading institution for theological education in Scotland. This photograph, taken in the mid-19th century, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who dedicated himself to preserving the spiritual and theological integrity of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland.
