SalomA head John Baptist daughter Herodias Herod Philip

Salome with the head of John the Baptist, Salome is the daughter of Herodias and Herod Philip. Her mother wanted to remarry Herod Antipas. The preacher John the Baptist had condemned this marriage and was imprisoned on it. On his birthday, Herod Antipas promised to give Salome what she wanted when she danced for him. Her mother Herodias urged her to ask the head of John the Baptist on a platter. Against his will, Herod kept his promise. After the dance, the severed head was carried on a saucer. New Testament, Matthew 14: 6-11, Mark 6: 14-29. Salome is presented here as an Eastern princess. She looks away from the dish in her hands, which she will give to her mother. The head of John the Baptist lies in a pool of blood on the saucer and is covered with a white cloth, which nevertheless clearly shows the contours of his face. Salome with the head of John the Baptist on a dish, Jan Adam Kruseman (signed by artist), Haarlem, c. 1861, oil paint (paint), canvas, h 120 cm × w 90 cm d 16 cm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the chilling moment of Salome with the head of John the Baptist. The scene depicts a significant biblical event where Salome, daughter of Herodias and Herod Philip, dances for Herod Antipas on his birthday. Influenced by her mother's desires, she requests the severed head of John the Baptist as her reward. In this artwork by Jan Adam Kruseman, Salome is portrayed as an exotic Eastern princess. She gazes away from the dish in her hands, which will soon be presented to her mother. The saucer holds the decapitated head of John the Baptist, resting in a pool of blood and covered with a white cloth that subtly reveals his facial contours. The painting vividly portrays both horror and fascination in its composition. It encapsulates the dramatic tension between power, desire, and morality present in this biblical narrative. Through skillful brushstrokes and attention to detail, Kruseman brings this haunting scene to life. This thought-provoking image serves as a reminder of human frailty and our capacity for manipulation driven by ambition or revenge. It invites contemplation on themes such as loyalty, sacrifice, and moral responsibility within historical contexts. Jan Adam Kruseman's masterpiece continues to captivate viewers with its powerful portrayal of one woman's fateful decision amidst political intrigue and personal vendetta – forever immortalizing Salome with the head of John the Baptist in art history.
