Vase of Flowers, 1916. Creator: Odilon Redon (French, 1840-1916)

Vase of Flowers, 1916. Redon played a major role in the revival of pastel in France in the late 19th century. Though he had worked almost exclusively in black and white throughout his youth--using charcoal and lithography--the change to colour that he made around 1890 signified a shift from asceticism to sensuality. He wrote to his friend, the collector Adries Bonger, " Pastel keeps me going, both materially and morally; it makes me feel young again." He began making still lifes in pastel as a way of mastering colour, but he found they ignited his imagination; he spoke of them as representing " the meeting points of two shores: representation and memory."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork titled "Vase of Flowers, 1916" by renowned French artist Odilon Redon. Redon played a significant role in the revival of pastel in France during the late 19th century, marking a transition from asceticism to sensuality in his work. Previously known for his black and white creations using charcoal and lithography, Redon's shift to color around 1890 was transformative both materially and morally. In a letter to his friend Adries Bonger, Redon expressed how working with pastel rejuvenated him, making him feel young again. He described these works as symbolic meeting points between representation and memory. The photograph captures the essence of this masterpiece while paying homage to its historical significance. It is a testament to Redon's artistic prowess and innovation within the realm of pastels.
