Mount Kyffin, c1911, (1913). Artist: Henry Bowers
Mount Kyffin, c1911, (1913). Mount Kyffin in the Beardmore Glacier Western mountain range. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Mount Kyffin in the Beardmore Glacier Western mountain range, taken by artist Henry Bowers during the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In 1910, Scott led the Terra Nova Expedition with a diverse team of scientists and experts, aiming to continue his scientific work and be the first to reach the South Pole. On January 17th, 1912, after enduring treacherous conditions and delays caused by blizzards, Scott and his companions Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans finally reached their long-awaited destination. However, their joy was short-lived as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them to it a month earlier. Tragically, facing severe weather conditions and dwindling supplies on their return journey from the pole, Scott's team succumbed to exhaustion and perished at the end of March. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies were found alongside poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle. The photograph serves as a haunting reminder of both human resilience in pursuit of knowledge and exploration but also highlights the unforgiving nature of Antarctica's icy wilderness. This image is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I published by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913 - an invaluable historical record preserving this extraordinary chapter in polar exploration for future generations.
