Madame Hippolyte Flandrin (Aimee Ancelot), 1869. Creator: Jean-Paul Flandrin (French
Madame Hippolyte Flandrin (Aimee Ancelot), 1869. Paul Flandrin drew this precise graphite portrait of his brother Hippolytes widow, Aimee Ancelot, a few years after Hippolytes death. The Flandrin brothers were both students of the painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867), who was known for his own very precise and technically accomplished graphite portraits. In fact, at some point a false signature of Ingress name was added on the drawings left side, where it is still visible. Pauls brother, Hippolyte, is represented in the exhibition by a graphite study made in preparation for a religious painting [cat. no. 32]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable graphite portrait created by Jean-Paul Flandrin in 1869. The subject of this precise and technically accomplished artwork is Madame Hippolyte Flandrin, also known as Aimee Ancelot. A few years after the death of her husband, Hippolyte, Paul Flandrin decided to immortalize his brother's widow through this stunning piece. Both Flandrin brothers were students of the renowned painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, who was celebrated for his own mastery in creating graphite portraits. Interestingly, at some point in time, a false signature bearing Ingres' name was added on the left side of the drawing – an intriguing detail that remains visible even today. In addition to this portrait of Aimee Ancelot, Paul's brother Hippolyte is also represented in this exhibition with a graphite study he made as preparation for a religious painting. This collection provides a glimpse into the artistic talents that ran within their family and highlights their dedication to capturing life's intricacies through their drawings. The use of graphite heightened with white chalk or gouache adds depth and dimension to Madame Hippolyte Flandrin's likeness while showcasing Jean-Paul Flandrin's skillful technique. Preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images and displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art (not affiliated with any company), this print invites viewers to appreciate the beauty and artistry captured within its delicate lines.
