King Edward III refuses succour to his son at the Battle of Crecy, France, 1346 (1864)

King Edward III refuses succour to his son at the Battle of Crecy, France, 1346 (1864). One of the defining battles of the Hundred Years War between England and France, Crecy was a victory for the English over a much larger French army, brought about largely by the impact of the English longbowmen. During the battle, Edward III (1312-1377) refused to assist his 16 year old son, Edward, the Black Prince, who commanded one of the three divisions of the English army, instead sending words of encouragement with Sir Thomas Norwich for the boy to win his spurs

EDITORS COMMENTS
King Edward III's Fateful Decision: A Defining Moment at the Battle of Crecy". In this lithograph, we witness a pivotal moment in history during the Hundred Years War. The year is 1346, and King Edward III of England stands resolute on the battlefield of Crecy, France. His son, Edward, known as the Black Prince, commands one division of the English army. Surrounded by chaos and armed conflict, King Edward faces an agonizing choice. Despite his paternal instincts urging him to protect his young heir, he makes a bold decision that will forever shape their destinies. Instead of rushing to aid his son in battle against overwhelming odds, he entrusts Sir Thomas Norwich with words of encouragement for the Black Prince to prove himself worthy. This powerful image captures not only a father's sacrifice but also showcases the strategic brilliance behind England's triumph at Crecy. The English longbowmen dominate the foreground with their deadly precision while armored knights charge forward in defiance. The artist James William Edmund Doyle masterfully depicts this historic scene with vibrant colors and meticulous attention to detail. Through this lithograph from 1864, we are transported back to a time when nations clashed for supremacy and honor. As we gaze upon this print from Heritage Images' Historica Graphica Collection, let us reflect on how one man's refusal to offer immediate succor ultimately shaped both personal legacies and altered the course of history itself.
