King Alfonso XIII, 1902. Creator: Fellez
King Alfonso XIII, 1902. Portrait of Alfonso XIII (1886-1941), King of Spain. The posthumous son of Alfonso XII, Alfonso XIII was proclaimed king at his birth, although his mother, Queen Maria Christina, ruled as regent until he reached the age of 16. Alfonso himself ruled from 1902 until 1931 when, refusing to abdicate when elections returned an overwhelming vote for a republic, he left the country, dying in exile in Rome in 1941. From " The English Illustrated Magazine", Volume XXVII, April to September 1902. [T. Fisher Unwin, London, 1902]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures King Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1902, showcasing the regal presence and youthful energy of the monarch. Created by Fellez, this portrait portrays a teenager who was proclaimed king at birth but ruled from 1902 until 1931. Despite his mother's regency during his early years, Alfonso eventually took charge of the country. Wearing a striking naval uniform, King Alfonso XIII exudes authority and confidence as he gazes into the distance. The monochrome tones add depth to his expression, highlighting both his royal lineage and determination to lead Spain through turbulent times. The image originates from "The English Illustrated Magazine" published by T. Fisher Unwin in London in 1902. This publication serves as a testament to King Alfonso's international recognition during that era. However, history tells us that Alfonso faced significant challenges towards the end of his reign when elections favored a republic over monarchy. Refusing to abdicate, he made the difficult decision to leave Spain for exile in Rome where he would later pass away in 1941. This photograph not only immortalizes an influential figure but also symbolizes an era marked by political transformations and societal shifts within Spain. It stands as a reminder of King Alfonso XIII's complex legacy - one that encompasses both admiration for his rule and contemplation on the changing tides of governance.
