General Joffre, (1919). Portrait of Joseph Joffre, French First World War general. Joffre (1852-1931) was declared the saviour of France when the German advance was halted at the Battle of the Marne in September 1914. Two years later he was effectively dismissed as Commander in Chief, but such was his public popularity his removal was disguised by appointing him Marshal of France.
