Colosseum print - north and south views, 1844. Creator: Ebenezer Landells
Colosseum print - north and south views, 1844. Panorama of London, one of a series made from daguerreotypes by Antoine Claudet, sketched by Henry Anelay and engraved by Ebenezer Landells. The daguerreotype images were taken from the top of York Column: The picture was not one complete whole, as it now appears upon the paper, but was divided upon a very great number of small silver plates. These had to be copied, and arranged each in its exact position, any small deficiences being filled in from nature. This labour required a talented artist, and occupied at the top of the column during many days, the pencil of Mr. H. Anelay...the Colosseum Print required upwards of sixty distinct blocks, to be consolidated into one perfect surface, without line, speck or flaw. This was done by Mr. Wells...the drawing upon the wood, a task performed by Mr. Sargeant. From a supplement to the " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Colosseum from both its north and south views, captured in 1844 by the talented creator Ebenezer Landells. The image is part of a larger panorama of London, which was meticulously composed using daguerreotype images taken from atop York Column. To bring this remarkable piece to life, Landells collaborated with Antoine Claudet, Henry Anelay, Mr. Wells, and Mr. Sargeant. The process behind creating this masterpiece was nothing short of extraordinary. The original picture consisted of numerous small silver plates that had to be copied and arranged meticulously to form one cohesive whole on paper. Any imperfections were carefully filled in from nature itself under the skilled hand of Mr. H. Anelay. To consolidate these sixty distinct blocks into a flawless surface without any lines or flaws required immense dedication and expertise from Mr. Wells. Additionally, the intricate drawing upon wood was skillfully executed by Mr. Sargeant. This Colosseum print stands as a testament to the artistic vision and technical prowess involved in capturing such grand architectural wonders during an era when photography was still in its infancy. It serves as a timeless reminder of our rich cultural heritage and invites us to marvel at the beauty that has stood the test of time for centuries.
