Bellona Leading the Armies of the Emperor against the Turks, 1600. Creator: Jan Muller (Dutch
Bellona Leading the Armies of the Emperor against the Turks, 1600. The central, striding figure, Bellona (the Roman goddess of war), is said to be either the sister or the wife of Mars, god of war. The double-headed eagle of the Hapsburgs appears on the flag behind her. Born in Amsterdam, Jan Muller probably learned engraving from his father, Harman Muller, a printmaker and publisher. He traveled to Italy in the 1590s and presumably stopped in Prague along the way. There he made prints based on designs by artists employed at the Hapsburg court, including Bartholomeaus Spranger (1546-1611)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Bellona Leading the Armies of the Emperor against the Turks, 1600" showcases a powerful and significant moment in history. The central figure, Bellona, strides confidently as she leads the armies of the Emperor against the Turks. As the Roman goddess of war, her presence exudes strength and determination. The flag behind Bellona bears the double-headed eagle emblem of the Hapsburgs, symbolizing their authority and power. This detail highlights their involvement in this military campaign. Jan Muller, a talented Dutch engraver from Amsterdam, created this remarkable piece. He likely learned his craft from his father who was also a printmaker and publisher. During his travels to Italy in the late 16th century, Muller stopped in Prague where he had access to influential artists employed at the Hapsburg court like Bartholomeaus Spranger. Printed from two plates using an engraving technique, this artwork demonstrates Muller's skillful craftsmanship. Preserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art and brought to us by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, this print allows us to appreciate both historical events and artistic excellence. Through its composition and subject matter, "Bellona Leading the Armies of the Emperor against the Turks" invites viewers to reflect on themes such as power dynamics between nations and gender roles within warfare. It serves as a testament to human resilience during times of conflict while showcasing Jan Muller's mastery as an engraver.
