EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment frozen in time, revealing the consequences of a night filled with revelry and excess. Taken on 1st March 1824 at Christchurch College Oxford, it showcases a group of disheveled undergraduates stumbling into church for matins, their bleary-eyed expressions betraying the toll that late-night drinking has taken on them. Entitled "Black Matins, or the effects of late drinking upon early risers" this original artwork was drawn and engraved by R Cruikshank for The English Spy in 1824. The artist's keen eye for detail brings to life the exhaustion and discomfort etched across each student's face as they attempt to fulfill their religious obligations despite their hangovers. The interior of the church provides an intriguing backdrop to this scene. Bathed in soft light filtering through stained glass windows, it contrasts sharply with the students' disarrayed appearance. Their colorful attire adds vibrancy to an otherwise somber setting, creating a visual juxtaposition that further emphasizes their state of intoxication. In this landscape format photograph, we witness young men grappling with both physical fatigue and regret from indulging in excessive merriment. As they don hats symbolizing their academic pursuits, one cannot help but ponder how these scholars will reconcile their wild nights with scholarly responsibilities. Preserved by Hulton Archive/Getty Images, this image offers us a glimpse into history while reminding us that even esteemed institutions like Oxford University are not immune to youthful indiscretions.
