EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite "Ex-voto" artwork created by the Italian School in the 17th century. Measuring 54.5 x 64.5 cm, this masterpiece is housed in the Museo degli Argenti at Palazzo Pitti in Florence, Italy. Commissioned by Grand Duke Cosimo II de Medici in 1617 and completed after his death, this panel serves as a votive offering to Saint Charles Borromeo, a revered saint known for his ability to heal sicknesses. The image portrays the duke dressed regally and kneeling in prayer before Saint Charles Borromeo. Designed by Giulio Parigi as the centerpiece of a gold altar intended for installation at Milan's chapel of St. Charles Borromeo, this panel features intricate pietra dura work, enamel reliefs, gems, and a gilded bronze frame. The mosaic inlay was skillfully executed by Michele Castrucci and Gualtieri Cecchi while Jonas Falk handled gem setting and enamel work. Although the original gold altar was melted down during political upheaval in 1789, this remarkable panel survived intact and was later mounted within its current frame. Through an open window depicted within the artwork itself, viewers can catch a glimpse of Florence's iconic Duomo - Santa Maria del Fiore - along with its towering structure. This photograph captures not only the artistic beauty but also reveals historical significance that transcends time; it offers us an extraordinary glimpse into both religious devotion and Renaissance craftsmanship.
