Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Empire Buying Begins at Home" captures a vibrant and captivating scene from the series "The UK Shows her Produce". Created by an English School artist in the 20th century, this colour lithograph is housed in the prestigious Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Jordison & Co Ltd for HMSO, this artwork is part of a larger collection of artist-designed posters that were created between 1926 and 1933. The Empire Marketing Board aimed to promote sales of goods produced within the British Empire across Great Britain, its Dominions, and Colonies. Manchester Art Gallery acquired over 200 posters from this campaign during the 1930s. These visually striking images showcase various aspects of life within the Empire, including its people, places, and products. However, it is important to note that some of these posters may raise uncomfortable questions about the legacy of empire today. This particular print invites viewers to consider how buying locally-made products can support economic growth within their own country while still acknowledging Britain's imperial past. With its bold colors and intricate details, this artwork serves as a reminder of both historical context and contemporary debates surrounding consumerism and national identity.
