EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, titled "Portrait of Joseph Raphael" showcases the remarkable life and journey of a man named Joseph Raphael. Created in 1852 by Charles Rodius, this artwork is a combination of pencil, pastel, and charcoal on paper. Joseph Raphael's story is one filled with both triumphs and hardships. Born in 1785, he was convicted of highway robbery and subsequently transported for life to Tasmania and Newcastle. However, against all odds, he received a conditional pardon in 1818 followed by an absolute pardon in 1842. After his release from prison, Raphael opened a shop on Pitt Street in Sydney where he sold various goods such as calico, vinegar, and tea. Over time, his business expanded as evidenced by its move to George Street in 1827. Despite facing financial difficulties throughout his entrepreneurial journey - being declared insolvent multiple times - Raphael persevered. Not only was he involved in court cases related to his business dealings but also faced legal consequences for assaulting Captain Brabyn during an altercation with the magistrate. Nevertheless, despite these setbacks and challenges along the way, Joseph Raphael managed to leave a lasting impression on Sydney society. Described as "a gentleman well known" by a local newspaper in 1848 before his passing on September 26th, 1853; this portrait serves as both a testament to resilience and an homage to an individual who defied expectations within their lifetime.
