Great Barrier Reef

Aerial photo in September 2017 of a portion of the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Cairns, Queensland, Australia. Parts of the reef have been subjected to a bleaching event which can damage the coral. Above-average sea water temperatures caused by global warming have been identified as a leading cause for coral bleaching worldwide. Between 2014 and 2016, the longest global bleaching events ever were recorded. In 2016, bleaching of coral on the Great Barrier Reef killed between 29 and 50 percent of the reefs coral

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning aerial photo captures a portion of the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Cairns, Queensland, Australia in September 2017. The vibrant colors and intricate patterns of the coral formations are truly mesmerizing. However, upon closer inspection, one can see the devastating effects of coral bleaching that have occurred in this area. Coral bleaching is a phenomenon caused by above-average sea water temperatures, often attributed to global warming. Between 2014 and 2016, the world experienced some of the longest global bleaching events ever recorded. In 2016 alone, between 29 and 50 percent of coral on the Great Barrier Reef perished due to bleaching. The stark contrast between healthy coral and bleached coral in this image serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need for environmental conservation efforts. As one of Earth's most diverse ecosystems, the Great Barrier Reef plays a crucial role in supporting marine life and maintaining biodiversity. Despite facing significant challenges from climate change and human activities such as pollution and overfishing, there is still hope for preserving this natural wonder. By raising awareness about these issues and taking action to reduce our carbon footprint, we can work towards protecting precious ecosystems like the Great Barrier Reef for future generations to enjoy.
